Writing Workshop with Sofie Laguna

On Tuesday 12th May 20 budding young writers were treated to some wonderful insights on writing by author Sofie Laguna.  Sofie has written books for a wide range of ages from picture books, through Our Australian girl and Do you dare series to adult fiction.  Her most recent adult novel, The eye of the sheep, was nominated for the Stella book prize and has been shortlisted for the Miles Franklin award.

Sofie probably surprised a lot of the audience by saying, that for her, it is always the character that comes first, not the plot. She began by getting the group to brainstorm a character of their making to demonstrate how writing can flow from a character not just from the plot.  This lead to lots of participation and Sofie was excellent at drawing responses from all the participants, even the reluctant ones.  Everyone participated with enthusiasm and remained focused for the hour and a half session.

Once they started writing the participants came up with some wonderful characters and interesting dialogue.  Probably the comment that best summed up the evening was “ It’s the first time I actually felt my character.”

About The Boys report

A number of boys and their dads, along with myself and a couple of other library staff were fortunate enough to meet and talk with Tim Pegler at Hawthorn Library on Wednesday night. If you weren't there, you missed out. Tim, author of Game as Ned spoke about some of his all time favourite books for boys and also told us how he came to write Game as Ned and his forthcoming book Five parts dead. You can read more about Tim at http://www.timpegler.com.au/.

This was the first in our About the Boys & About the Girls events for 2010. The girls kick of on Tuesday night at Kew Library with Lili Wilkinson. More details here.

Next week I'll post details of the boys and girls combined event in June. If you were one of the boys present on Wednesday night, don't forget I got over excited and promised you a Freddo if you submit a review to the blog before then! Bonus points for the first person to submit a review of Game as Ned. If you were there you may have noticed how much I like throwing Freddos around the library, so don't miss out.
