The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier

The Chocolate War
An oldie but a goodie! Can a book written in 1974 still be relevant to you today?  You bet it can! This book was controversial when it was published and it still is today. This is no Enid Blyton school story.

Set in an American high school, one boy sets out to stand up to the school bullies. Trinity Catholic High School is run by the repressive and sadistic Brother Leon and a vicious “secret society” of senior boys. When Jerry refuses to participate in an annual fund-raising chocolate sale, all hell breaks loose - the physical and psychological bullying abuse begins. Robert Cormier has written a startling and shocking novel about the price one can pay for “daring to disturb” the status quo of a school environment - and about the uses and abuses of power in the school yard and the world beyond. This is a very dark book about school life - could it ever happen here?
