Staff review - Blueback, by Tim Winton

Cover
Abel and his mother, Dora live in their own bit of a rural coast. When Abel isn't in the sea diving with his mother, he's dreaming of it. One day while diving for abalone, they meet a giant blue groper. Over time, Abel befriends the gentle giant - Blueback. But when poachers catch wind of the discovery of the giant blue groper, Abel and Blueback need to find a way to not only stay together but to survive - both of them. While on land, Dora is approached by developers to turn Longboat Bay, their home, into a luxury resort. The developers turn nasty when Dora and Abel refuse their proposal and the pair need to use their cunning and wit if their home is to live on. A story about growing up, friendship and respect for our environment.
