I am J by Cris Beam

J is just another average teenager:  he wants to go to college, he has falling outs with his best friend, he wants to make his parents proud and he wants to be himself. But what happens when being yourself isn't so easy? What happens when being yourself means lying to your family and friends and living a double life. What happens when being yourself means being the opposite of what the rest of the world thinks you are?

Being assigned the wrong gender at birth, J desperately wants to live his life how he wants to: as male. Afraid of how those closest to him will feel about the truth, yet determined, J seeks hormone therapy to make physical changes but being under 18 means he needs parental permission. The closer J gets to fulfilling his wish, the further he distances himself from his family and friends. But could it be as easy as telling them the truth? This is a moving coming of age story about friendship, love and courage.
