Almost seventeen-year-old Mim knows exactly what she doesn't want. She doesn't want to end up like her mother, who spends most of her time lying on the couch, nor her brothers, currently residing in prison. She doesn't want to enter the illegal family business. She doesn't want to accept the same fate of many girls in her neighbourhood, and leave school early to get a job, or worse, have babies.

Mim lives by a set of strict rules regarding her mum, drugs and alcohol, school, and especially boys. However, as she gets older, these rules are becoming harder to live by. In the nine days preceding her birthday, when Mim strays just once from her rules, she finds her life turned upside down.

This is a fantastic Australian coming-of-age novel, beautifully written and very original. Highly recommended.
