Black Spring by Alison Croggon

Inspired by Bronte's Wuthering Heights, Australian author Alison Croggon's novel is a traditional gothic tale with a bit of magic thrown in. Set amongst misty moors, the sense of danger and oppression conveyed by the landscape plays as much a part in the story as any of its human characters. It tells the story of Lina, beautiful, wild, privileged, and a witch, and her faithful milk-sister, Anna, loyal to Lina and destined to become her servant and protector.

Anna and Lina grow up together in the Red House, and when brooding Damek comes to live with them, Lina and Damek become obsessed with each other, largely casting Anna aside to indulge their infatuation. Little do they know that their world is changing, vendetta is coming to their town, and as they pass into adulthood, nothing in their lives will be the same again. In intriguing and original novel.
