Erebos by Ursula Poznanski; translated by Judith Pattinson

This novel was originally a bestseller in the author's native Austria and has been translated (and set in London) by Melbourne born Judith Pattinson.

Teenager Nick Dunmore is handed a disc by one of his school friends which he finds to be a game called Erebos, which warns him, "Enter, or turn back. This is Erebos". It contains graphics and intuitive character responses better than Nick has ever seen and he quickly finds himself highly addicted to the game, as are most of the kids in his school.

However, Erebos is not as harmless as it seems. As Nick advances through the game he starts to receive instructions to complete real-world tasks, with the promise of great rewards online. The lines between game and reality, right and wrong, winning and losing become blurred, causing Nick to wonder what Erebos really wants. What is its sinister goal?

A fascinating scenario exploring the influence of online games, this was a compelling, suspenseful and addictive thriller that kept me guessing.
