ReviewbyU: In ecstacy by Kate McCaffrey

Reviewer: Kate
Rating: 5 stars

In Ecstasy is a gripping story following the lives of two teenage girls, Sophie and Mia. Sophie is the popular girl who gets all the attention, whether it is good or bad. Mia, on the other hand, is shy and would be a no one without her best friend to guide her.

The two attend a party one night, and Mia, being Mia, is a bit left out. All that changes when Sophie suggests they try a tiny pill with an equally tiny butterfly printed on it. Mia figures she has nothing left to loose and doesn’t hesitate. In doing so, she completely transforms herself; she crawls out of her shell of insecurities and steps into a whole new confident body. For once Sophie doesn’t have to look out for Mia… Or does she?

After going to a couple more parties, Mia continues to use the drug. It made her feel like she could do anything, and plus, there was no danger in only taking a few, right? Sophie though, has much more sense and knows the risks involved in letting the tiny capsule into her body. Sophie and Mia, once best friends, start to drift apart because of their opinions. Sophie tries to warn Mia of the dangers that lurk out in the world of parties, drugs and alcohol, but Mia’s too busy with her new role of miss popularity to listen to no one’s like Sophie.
This powerful novel told from the alternating points of view of the girls is one you can’t put down, and one that every teenager and adult should read. It’s a real eye-opener into the world of teenage addiction and how a friendship, and life itself, can be destroyed with one seemingly harmless pill.
