When we were two by Robert Newton

Winner of the Prime Minister's Literary Award for YA Fiction and honour book in the CBCA Awards, Older Readers category, 2012.

"Dan had to go,
He had no choice,
But leaving home was never
going to be easy..."

Dan and his brother Eddie flee their abusive father in search of their long lost mother who now lives on the coast in Port Macquarie. Dan, the older of the two brothers must take responsibility for his intellectually disabled little brother, as they march on foot across country, during the time of the First World War. On the way they encounter the best and worst of humanity, as they escape new threats, well-meaning adults, make new friends and earn the respect of fellow travellers.

This book, not surprisingly, has a wonderful Australian 'accent' to the language and vivdly drawn characters in the equally vividly detailed Australian landscape. You can't help but be completely loyal to Dan and Eddie, as are the many friends they make on their journey. Ultimately this is a touching story about mateship, brotherhood, loyalty and hope. One word of warning: get your tissues ready.
