Reckless by Cornelia Funke

Through the mirror in his father's study Jacob Reckless discovers a world peopled with fairytale characters, where humans and Goyls (stone people) are locked in battle. Jacob's brother, Will, follows Jacob and is wounded by a Goyl weapon. So begins a desperate race, which will see Jacob make deals with dwarves and fairies, in order to stop Will from turning to stone.
