Clariel: the lost Abhorsen (The old kingdom #4) by Garth Nix

Once again Garth Nix has written an intricate and engrossing fantasy set in the Old Kingdom.  Clariel is the prequel to Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series which includes Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen. Clariel is the daughter of a gifted goldsmith and is related to both the King and the Abhorsen.  Clariel has grown up enjoying the freedom of the forests and is most unhappy when her parents decide to move to the bustling city of Belisaere.  But all is not right in Belisaere.  The king has become reclusive which has allowed a strong  goldsmith guild family to control the city.  At a dinner with this ruling family, Clariel’s parents are murdered in front of her.  Clariel manages to escape with some help and discovers that she is a berserk – some one whose rage can make her an unstoppable force. She  longs to escape to the forest again but first she must seek revenge for her parent’s deaths.  While under guard at the Abhorsen’s house, she forms a strange alliance with free magic beings who help her to plot her revenge for her parent’s murder.
