Running Girl (A Garvie Smith mystery) by Simon Mason

Meet Garvie Smith - his friends call him Sherlock. He has quite a few things in common with the Great Detective, he has a genius level IQ but is almost chronically bored to the point where nothing is interesting. UNTIL the body of the most popular girl in school (who was also an ex-girlfriend) is pulled out of a lake in a creepily deserted part of town… everyone is curious, the town is shocked and the media runs wild with the story with headlines like BEAST KILLED BEAUTY.

With Garvie’s Mum threatening to take up a nursing job in another country if his grades don’t improve, his year level co-ordinator watching his every move with suspicion (as he’s missed more than a few classes) and the police warning him to stay out of their way - Garvie finds himself not at all bored.

I loved this book - every time I thought I’d worked it out, there would be a twist. Garvie isn’t always a likeable character and he doesn’t always make the best choices but he kept  me from getting bored. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series
