18 year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is serving out a life sentence in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, yet finds herself released after only one year into the care of charismatic Crown Prince Dorian and his gruff Captain of the Guard, Westfall. Her relative freedom is based on the condition she compete in a competition to determine the King's new Champion. If she loses, she dies. If she wins, she need only serve her term as Champion, then she will truly to be free. However, besides the brutal training and competition, Celaena findes herself embroiled in a violent mystery as the competitors are killed off one by one. Who is committing the murders?
