The Diviners (Diviners #1) by Libba Bray

This entertaining supernatural crime thriller, set in 1920s New York, is loads of fun. Young, sassy flapper Evie is exiled from small-town Ohio and sent to stay with her Uncle Will in New York. Evie, being a thoroughly modern gal, is thrilled to be a part of the action in the big city; the speak-easies, rent parties, stage shows and shopping that make New York the most happening place to be! And Evie intends to make the most of every minute!

However, Uncle Will, owner of the creepy Museum of American Folklore, Superstition and the Occult, is asked to consult on a series of occult-based murders and Evie and several of her new acquaintances are drawn into the investigation. What the others don't know is that Evie has abilities that could help them catch the killer, but can she trust them with her secret?

Set against the social, religious and cultural melting pot of New York in the 1920s, The Diviners was hard to put down, despite its 500+ pages. My only problem with the book is the wait for the next instalment - Diviners #2 - Lair of dreams is due April 2014.
