Magical Margaret Mahy

Sadly New Zealand author Margaret Mahy has died aged 76.  She was a prolific writer writing 40 novels, 20 collections of short stories and over 100 picture books.  She wrote for all ages from preschoolers to young adults and her books were always a wonderful mixture of humour and fantasy as well as being thought provoking.  Her mastery of language was the trademark of her books and this, coupled with a vivid imagination, meant her books were always an engrossing read.
She was internationally recognised and awarded for her work, winning the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen award in 2006.  She was also a fabulous, witty and engaging speaker who kept her audience entertained and entranced. I feel like I’ve lost some one very special.
Among my favourite books by her are:
·          The great piratical rumbustification
·          The changeover
·          The catalogue of the universe
·          The man whose mother was a pirate
·          The dragon of an ordinary family
The library has recently purchased a Margaret Mahy treasury, which has a fabulous collection of many of her works in one volume, a great way to introduce yourself to her writing.
We are very lucky that she leaves such a huge body of work for us all to continue to enjoy. Farwell Margaret you will be missed.
