The Crowfield curse, by Pat Walsh

This is a gripping book. Set in 1347 it deals with the life of 14 year old William whose family have been killed in a house fire. William is taken in by the monks at Crowfield Abbey and leads an uneventful life until the day he finds a hob with its leg caught in a trap. Most humans can’t see hobs but William seems to have the “sight” which allows him to do this.  William takes the hob back to the abbey to be cared for and this one act seems to set in train a host of strange events. Many years ago an angel was killed at the abbey and buried near by but no one is sure of the exact location.  The dead angel and William’s powers draw two mysterious visitors to the abbey. They believe William can help them locate the angel but other forces are also gathering and, as the tension mounts, William’s life is threatened by these powerful, competing forces.
